A task force composed of business community members and citizens residing west of France Avenue in the Cornelia neighborhood have been working on the creation of both decision principles and now a broader plan for the future of the Southdale Area. The Southdale District, defined as that area bordered by the Crosstown on the north and 494 on the south, York Avenue on the east and France Avenue on the west is where our most expensive land is located and where most of our recent residential and commercial activity has been occurring. Projects completed or nearing completion are the market rate apartments at One Southdale Place and the three building complex at 71 France, located behind the new Byerly’s store. Projects approved and underway are Aurora on France –a senior independent living, assisted living and transitional care facility which will be connected to Edina’s second skyway between Aurora on France and the hospital parking ramp. Also underway is a 6 story multi-use project on the former Wickes furniture site on York Avenue. Also approved but not yet underway is the Beacon Interfaith affordable housing project called 66 West, which is located at the former TCF bank site on 66th Street, across from the north side of Southdale. A project preliminarily approved is a new apartment building for the former Best Buy site at 66th and York.
